Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA):

Adult Children of Alcoholics (or any other dysfunctional family) are those of us who were raised without personal validation and abused or neglected in our families of origins. The hallmark of this disease is an inner feeling of low self worth and a continual need to have to "prove oneself" by trying to live up to others impossible standards. This all stems from our childhood upbringing where we were never given a sense of self-worth.
